What Is Bass Boost?

Bass boost raises the level of low frequencies, usually with a shelving filter that lifts everything below a chosen cutoff. It is the most popular audio adjustment there is, and also the one most constrained by physics.

Why bass is expensive

Low frequencies require far more energy to reproduce at a given perceived level than high frequencies, and they require the driver to move much further. A 6 dB boost at 60 Hz demands substantially more power and excursion than the same boost at 6 kHz.

This is why bass boost eats headroom so quickly, and why small drivers distort rather than getting deeper. A laptop speaker or an earbud simply cannot displace enough air to produce meaningful output below roughly 100–200 Hz.

Getting it right

Match the cutoff to the hardware
On small speakers, a lift centred around 150–200 Hz produces audible warmth. Boosting 50 Hz produces distortion.
Reduce the output gain
Bass boost adds energy, so lower the overall level to compensate or the limiter will simply pull everything back down.
Consider cutting instead
If audio sounds muddy rather than thin, cutting around 250 Hz usually works better than boosting below it.
Fix the seal first
On earbuds, a proper seal recovers more bass than any amount of boosting.
