Streaming Volume

Streaming platforms all normalize playback loudness, which is why one service can sound noticeably quieter than another and why a boosted master no longer plays louder than anything else. Each platform does it slightly differently, and some expose a setting you can change.

Why streaming audio is quieter than your own files

Every major platform measures the loudness of what you upload and adjusts playback toward a target of its own choosing. The targets differ, which is why switching between two services can mean reaching for the volume control even though nothing is wrong with either.

The adjustment is also one-directional in practice. Content mastered very loud gets turned down toward the target; content recorded quietly is generally left alone, because raising it would lift the noise floor along with it. That asymmetry explains the most common complaint of all — that some videos are unfixably quiet while others are fine.

What this means for boosting

The player slider cannot help
It attenuates from the source level rather than adding gain, so 100% is simply "no reduction". A quiet upload stays quiet at maximum.
Encryption decides everything
If a service delivers audio through DRM, the browser deliberately keeps that stream away from JavaScript and no page or extension can reach it.
Some platforms hand you the control
Where a service exposes its own normalization target, changing that setting is far more effective than any external tool.
