Small speakers are limited by physics, but most are not being used to their full potential. Placement alone can add a genuinely audible amount, and the right kind of processing — compression rather than bass boost — extracts considerably more than the obvious approach.

What helps most, in order

Put it on a hard surface
A laptop on a bed or a cushion absorbs the sound. Moving it to a desk is free and immediately noticeable, especially for downward-firing speakers.
Use a corner or a wall
Boundaries reinforce low frequencies. A speaker near a wall sounds fuller than the same speaker in open space.
Compress rather than boost bass
Compression raises average level within the driver's capability. Bass boost asks it to do something it physically cannot.
Point it at you
High frequencies are directional, so an off-axis speaker sounds both quieter and duller.

Why placement beats processing on small speakers

A small driver moves a small amount of air, and low frequencies need a great deal of air moved to be heard at all. That is why boosting bass on a laptop speaker mostly produces distortion: you are asking for output the driver physically cannot generate, and spending amplifier headroom to fail at it.

Room boundaries do the job instead, and for free. A surface underneath reflects sound that would otherwise radiate away from you, and a nearby wall reinforces low frequencies through a well-understood acoustic effect. Moving a laptop from a duvet to a desk is frequently a larger improvement than anything available in software.
