Why Are My Speakers So Quiet?
Quiet speakers usually come down to one of four things: the balance between two volume controls, the wrong output port, obstruction, or placement. Powered speakers add their own amplifier to the chain, which is where most of the confusion originates.

- Set the system to 80–100% and use the speaker knob for level. The reverse forces the amplifier to work harder and raises noise.
- The output port
- Front-panel jacks often route through a weaker amplifier than the rear line output. Try the rear green jack.
- Blocked or dirty grilles
- Dust in the grille reduces output. A soft brush is the safe tool.
- Placement
- A hard surface and a nearby wall reinforce output substantially. Fabric absorbs it.
- System loudness settings
- On Windows, Loudness Equalization helps small speakers considerably.
The gain staging problem in plain terms
Powered speakers put two volume controls in series: one in software and one on the speaker itself. The instinct is to set the software low and turn the knob up, because the knob feels like the real control. That combination is the worst of the options available.
A low digital level throws away resolution before the signal ever leaves the computer, and it forces the speaker amplifier to work harder for the same output, amplifying its own noise floor along with your audio. Setting the system near maximum and using the knob to attenuate gives a stronger signal into the amplifier and a quieter background.
