What Is an Equalizer?
An equalizer adjusts how loud specific frequency ranges are relative to each other. Where a volume control moves everything together, an equalizer changes the balance — which is what you need when audio is loud enough but sounds wrong.
Filter types
- Shelving filter
- Raises or lowers everything above or below a cutoff frequency. A bass booster is a low shelf; a treble booster is a high shelf.
- Peaking filter
- Affects a band centred on a chosen frequency, tapering either side. The Q control sets how wide that band is.
- Graphic equalizer
- A fixed set of bands with sliders. Simple to use, less precise, common in consumer players.
- Parametric equalizer
- Adjustable frequency, gain and Q per band. Far more precise, and standard in professional work.
Why cutting usually beats boosting
The instinct when something is hard to hear is to raise it. Experienced engineers more often lower whatever is competing with it, because masking is the actual problem: a voice buried under music is not too quiet in absolute terms, it is quiet relative to the energy sitting in the same frequency range.
Cutting also has a practical advantage. Every boost consumes headroom and pushes you closer to the ceiling, so a heavily boosted curve forces you to reduce the output afterwards and you end up no louder. A cut does the opposite, freeing room that a gain stage can then use.
