What Is Audio Normalization?
Normalization means adjusting audio so its level sits at a defined target. Two distinct processes share the name, and confusing them explains a lot of frustration: peak normalization uses the loudest single sample as its reference, loudness normalization uses perceived average loudness.

- Normalizing changed almost nothing
- One isolated peak — a cough, a door, a plosive — is already near the ceiling, so there is no headroom to use. The average level is low but peak normalization cannot see that.

- That is compression rather than normalization doing the work. The average rose because the dynamics were squeezed, which is a real change to the recording.
- Two normalized files still differ in loudness
- They were matched on peaks, not on perceived loudness. A dense track and a sparse one with identical peaks can sound many decibels apart.

- Playback normalization works in both directions relative to its target, and heavily mastered albums are the ones it pulls down most.
Where you encounter it
Every major streaming service applies loudness normalization on playback, turning tracks toward a common target so that switching between them does not require reaching for the volume. Broadcast television has done the same for years under regulations intended to stop advertisements being louder than programmes.
Peak normalization is the version in audio editors — the "normalize" command that raises a clip until its loudest point touches the ceiling. Useful, but easily defeated by a single stray peak.
