What Is Audio Enhancement?

Audio enhancement is a loose term for processing intended to make audio more pleasant: equalization to fix tonal balance, compression for consistency, and sometimes stereo widening. It reshapes what is present. It does not recover what is absent.

What enhancement genuinely does

Enhancement earns its name when it is correcting a known, predictable deficiency rather than trying to improve something already balanced. Laptop speakers roll off below roughly 200 Hz and emphasise the midrange; earbuds without a proper seal lose their low end entirely; a car cabin adds boom at specific frequencies. These are stable, repeatable faults.

Applied to good headphones in a quiet room, the same processing has nothing to correct, so it can only move the sound away from what the engineer intended. That is the honest dividing line: enhancement compensates for playback conditions, and where the conditions are already good there is nothing for it to do.
