Why Is Audio Too Quiet?
Audio ends up too quiet for a handful of recurring reasons, and each has a different remedy. Knowing which applies saves you from changing settings that were never involved.
The five common causes
- Conservative recording levels
- Recording engineers leave headroom to avoid clipping, because clipping is unrecoverable and quiet audio can be amplified later. Amateur recordings often leave far more than necessary.
- Wide dynamic range
- Film and classical mixes span a huge range between whisper and explosion. Reproduced in a noisy room on small speakers, the quiet end disappears. Compression, not gain, is the fix.
- Safety limits

- Downmixed surround
- A 5.1 mix folded to stereo often leaves the centre channel — and therefore dialogue — too quiet relative to effects.
