Amplification versus normalization
Amplification applies the same multiplication to every sample. If the quiet parts go up 12 dB, the loud parts go up 12 dB too, and the relationship between them is unchanged. That is exactly what you want for a recording with a consistent level that just happens to sit low.
It is the wrong tool for a recording where one speaker is loud and another is a whisper. Amplifying that raises both, so the loud speaker hits the limiter while the quiet one is still hard to hear. For those files, use the audio normalizer instead — it changes the relationship between loud and quiet rather than moving everything together.
What the percentages mean
The fader shows percentages because they are intuitive, but decibels are what audio engineers use.

Frequently asked questions
What file formats work?
Anything your browser can decode: MP3, WAV, OGG, FLAC, M4A, and the audio track of MP4 and WebM video. Support varies slightly between browsers, and the tool will tell you if a file fails to decode.
Can I download the amplified file?
Not yet. Amplification happens live as the audio plays, so there is no rendered copy to save. Writing the processed signal out to a file is on the list.
Why does 800% not sound eight times louder?
Perceived loudness does not scale with amplitude. Roughly speaking, a 10 dB increase sounds about twice as loud, so +18 dB sounds around three to four times louder — not eight. The limiter also holds peaks back, which further reduces the apparent jump.
