What Is Audio Amplification?
Amplification means increasing the level of a signal. It happens in two very different places: digitally, by multiplying numbers before conversion to analogue, and physically, by an amplifier circuit increasing electrical power afterwards.
Where the two meet
A complete playback chain runs digital gain first, then conversion to analogue, then electrical amplification, then a driver turning that into air movement. Each stage has its own ceiling, and the lowest one governs everything: raising the others gains you nothing.
This is why identifying the binding constraint matters more than the size of any single adjustment. A quiet file with capable headphones is limited by the file. A loud file with high-impedance headphones on a phone is limited by the amplifier. The same complaint — "it is not loud enough" — has completely different fixes depending on which ceiling you have hit.

Why the distinction matters
Digital amplification cannot help headphones that are not receiving enough electrical power. Turning the numbers up produces a larger digital signal, but the amplifier converting it is already at its limit — so the result is distortion rather than volume.
Conversely, a hardware amplifier does nothing for a file that was recorded quietly. It faithfully amplifies a quiet signal along with its noise floor. Matching the fix to the cause is the whole game.

Is digital amplification lossless?
Within available headroom it is essentially transparent. Beyond that, limiting or clipping must intervene, and both change the signal.
Why do studio headphones need an amplifier?
High-impedance designs require more voltage to reach a given level than a phone can supply. Without it they play quietly with weak bass regardless of settings.
