What Is Audio Clipping?
Clipping occurs when a signal exceeds the maximum value a system can represent. The peaks have nowhere to go, so they flatten into a straight line — literally clipped off. The result is a harsh, crackling distortion that is easy to hear and impossible to undo.
Why it sounds so bad
A flattened peak is no longer the smooth curve it was. Mathematically, that sudden corner introduces a spray of new harmonic content that was not in the original — largely odd harmonics, which our ears find particularly unpleasant.
This is why clipping sounds like crackle and fizz rather than simply "loud". You are not hearing the original signal at a higher level; you are hearing added frequencies that were never there.
How to avoid it
- Leave headroom
- Keep peaks a decibel or two below maximum so brief transients have somewhere to go.
- Use a limiter
- A limiter reduces peaks before they reach the ceiling. This is why boosters with limiting go far further than those without.
- Prefer soft clipping
- Rounding the peak rather than squaring it produces gentler harmonics. Still distortion, but far less objectionable.
- Cut before boosting
- Reducing a dominant frequency range frees headroom for the gain stage to use.

Not properly. Declipping tools estimate what the flattened peaks might have been, but the original values are gone. Prevention is the only reliable approach.
