How to Get Louder Audio Without Distortion
Distortion happens when a signal exceeds what the format or the hardware can represent. Getting more loudness without it means creating headroom before you use it — which is a question of the order you apply things in.
The right order
Cut before you boost
If one frequency range dominates, reduce it rather than raising everything else. Cutting creates headroom; boosting consumes it.
Compress before applying gain
Compression lowers the peaks that would otherwise limit you. With the peaks under control there is room for meaningful makeup gain.
Use soft clipping, not hard clipping
Hard clipping squares off a waveform and produces harsh odd harmonics. Soft clipping rounds the peak instead, which is far less objectionable.
Watch the meter, not the number
The headroom meter shows how hard the limiter is working. Occasional red is fine. Constantly red means you are past the point of useful return.

They do different jobs and work best together. A limiter catches peaks smoothly over a short window; soft clipping catches whatever slips past it instantly. Using both gives cleaner results than either alone.
