How to Increase Bluetooth Volume

Bluetooth devices have two volume controls: one on your phone or computer, one in the accessory. Absolute volume linking merges them into a single slider, and when that implementation is poor the two compound and you lose a large part of your range.

The fix, platform by platform

  1. Android

    Enable Developer options by tapping Build number seven times in Settings › About phone. Then Settings › Developer options › Networking › Disable absolute volume. Reconnect the accessory, set its own volume high, and use the phone slider to control level.

  2. Windows

    There is no equivalent toggle. Set Windows to 100% and control level using the accessory's own buttons, which avoids the two controls fighting.

  3. iOS and macOS

    No unlinking option. Check Headphone Safety on iOS and Reduce loud sounds on macOS instead — these cap output regardless of the slider.

Set both controls, not just one

Once the two volume controls are independent, the way you balance them matters. Leaving the accessory near its maximum and using the phone slider for day-to-day adjustment gives you the widest usable range, because the accessory's amplifier is then working in the part of its range where it performs best.

The reverse — phone at maximum, accessory turned down — works too but gives you a coarser control, since the accessory's own buttons usually offer far fewer steps than the phone slider. If you find the volume jumps from too quiet to too loud with nothing in between, that is what has happened.
