Cutting usually beats boosting

The instinct is to boost the range you want more of. Experienced engineers more often cut the ranges competing with it. If a voice is buried, reducing 250 Hz on the music often does more than raising 4 kHz on the voice, because it removes the thing that was masking it rather than piling more energy on top.

Cutting also preserves headroom. Every boost eats into the space before clipping, so a heavily boosted EQ curve forces you to reduce the output gain anyway. Cutting has the opposite effect.

Frequently asked questions

Can an equalizer make audio louder?

Indirectly. Boosting a band adds energy in that range, which raises the overall level somewhat, and lifting the presence range can make speech feel much clearer without being measurably louder. But if everything is uniformly quiet, gain is the more direct tool.

What do the ± numbers mean?

Decibels of boost or cut at that band centre. ±3 dB is a subtle adjustment, ±6 dB is obvious, ±12 dB is dramatic and easy to overdo.

Why does boosting bass cause distortion?

Low frequencies carry a lot of energy. A +9 dB bass boost can push peaks well past the ceiling, and small speakers or earbuds may also physically run out of excursion. Reduce the output gain to compensate.
