Bass Booster vs Equalizer
A bass booster is functionally one band of an equalizer — a low shelf — with a simpler interface. An equalizer gives you that band plus four more. Where the bass booster wins is that its two controls are the two that matter for low end, so it is harder to get wrong.

Diagnosing a low-end problem in three steps
Thin and muddy are opposite faults that both get described as "bad bass", and the fixes point in opposite directions.
Listen for weight versus clutter
Thin audio has no foundation — kick drums click rather than thump. Muddy audio has too much foundation, and everything above it sounds veiled and indistinct. Deciding which you are hearing determines everything that follows.
If it is thin, set the cutoff before the amount
Choose where bass ends: around 80 Hz lifts only the deep foundation, while 300 Hz also raises the lower body of voices and guitars. Get that wrong and a modest boost still sounds wrong.
If it is muddy, cut instead of boosting
Reducing around 250 Hz almost always beats adding more below it, and a single-band bass booster cannot do this because it has no cut in that region. This is the case where the full equalizer is genuinely necessary.
When you need the equalizer instead
If the problem is that audio sounds thin, a bass booster fixes it. If it sounds muddy, the fix is usually cutting around 250 Hz rather than boosting below it — and a bass booster cannot cut a band it does not have.
Muddiness is one of the most common misdiagnoses in this area. The instinct is to add more bass; the correct move is often to remove low mids so the real bass has room.

Can I boost bass on small speakers?
Only within what the driver can reproduce. Below roughly 100–200 Hz a laptop speaker or earbud produces almost nothing, so boosting there wastes headroom and adds distortion.
