What Is Loudness?
Loudness is a perceptual quality — how loud something seems to a listener. Level is a physical measurement. They diverge often enough that two files with identical peak levels can sound dramatically different in volume.
Why peak level misleads
Perceived loudness tracks the average energy of a signal over time, not its highest instantaneous point. A recording with one sharp peak and quiet content throughout has a high peak level and low loudness. A heavily compressed recording with the same peak has far more average energy and sounds much louder.
Human hearing is also frequency-dependent: we are considerably more sensitive around 2–5 kHz than at the extremes. The same measured level sounds louder in the midrange than in deep bass, which is why loudness measurement standards weight frequencies rather than treating them equally.
The loudness war and what ended it
For decades, mastering engineers pushed average levels ever higher so that records would stand out on radio and in shops. The cost was dynamic range: heavily limited masters that sound impressive briefly and tiring over an album.
Streaming playback normalization largely removed the incentive. When every track is turned toward a common target on playback, a louder master no longer plays louder — it just arrives with less dynamic range than its neighbours.
