Spotify Volume: The Settings That Matter
Spotify normalizes playback so that tracks sit at a consistent loudness, and it exposes a setting controlling how aggressive that normalization is. Changing it from the default to the loud option produces an immediate and substantial increase. This is more effective than any external boost, and the web player cannot be boosted externally anyway because it uses DRM.
Turn Spotify up properly
Available in the desktop and mobile apps. The exact wording varies between versions.
Open playback settings
In the desktop app, Settings › Playback. On mobile, Settings and privacy › Playback.
Set the volume level to loud
The volume level control usually offers three options — quiet, normal and loud. Normal is the default. Loud raises the normalization target, which makes everything noticeably louder at the cost of some dynamic range. This is the single most effective change available.
Consider normalization itself
The same screen has a switch for audio normalization. Leaving it on keeps levels consistent across your library. Turning it off means loud masters play loud and quiet ones stay quiet — which some people prefer, but it makes inconsistency worse rather than better.
Use the equalizer
Also under playback settings on mobile and desktop. A modest lift at the low and high ends can increase perceived loudness on small speakers without touching the volume slider.
Why the loud setting works
Spotify measures the loudness of every track and applies gain at playback to bring it toward a target. The quiet, normal and loud options simply change that target. Choosing loud raises it, so more gain is applied to most tracks.
The trade-off is real: at a higher target, tracks with wide dynamic range need limiting to avoid clipping, so some peak detail is lost. For listening in a car or on public transport this is usually the right trade. For attentive listening in a quiet room it is not.
Frequently asked questions
Why is Spotify quieter than YouTube?
Different normalization targets. Each platform picks its own reference loudness, so the same track can play at a different level on each. Setting Spotify to the loud option narrows the gap considerably.
Does the loud setting reduce quality?
It applies more gain and consequently more limiting to dynamic tracks. On most material and most equipment the difference is subtle; on wide-dynamic-range recordings through good headphones it is audible.
Can I boost Spotify with a browser tool?
Not the web player, because of DRM. Music files you own can be boosted with the music booster.
