The two specifications that matter
- Sensitivity
- How much sound pressure the driver produces per unit of power, usually given in dB per mW or per volt. Higher sensitivity means louder from the same source. This is the more useful number for predicting loudness.
- Impedance
- Electrical resistance in ohms. Most consumer headphones are 16–32 ohms and work well from phones and laptops. Studio models at 250 or 600 ohms need far more voltage than a phone provides and will sound quiet and thin without a dedicated amplifier.
When you need an amplifier
If your headphones are high-impedance and connected to a phone or thin laptop, the device physically cannot deliver enough voltage to drive them properly. Symptoms are consistent: quiet at maximum volume, weak bass, and no improvement from any software setting.

Quick checks
- Fit and seal
- On in-ear models, a poor seal loses most of the bass and a lot of apparent loudness. Try a different tip size before anything else.
- Debris in the mesh
- Earwax and dust in the nozzle mesh reduces output significantly and builds up gradually enough to go unnoticed.
- Partly inserted plug
- A 3.5 mm plug not fully seated, often because of a phone case, causes quiet or one-sided sound.
- Balance setting
- Check the balance slider on your device is centred.
Frequently asked questions
Why are my headphones quiet at maximum volume?
Either a software limit such as iOS Headphone Safety or Android absolute volume, or an impedance mismatch where your device cannot drive them. If they are equally quiet on every device, it is the hardware.
Can a volume booster damage headphones?
Sustained heavy distortion can damage drivers over time, though modern headphones are fairly robust. The greater risk is to your hearing, not the equipment.
Do more expensive headphones play louder?
Not necessarily — many high-end models are less sensitive and harder to drive, so they play quieter from a phone than cheap earbuds do.
