Volume Booster for Movies
The classic complaint about film audio is not that it is quiet, but that dialogue is inaudible while action scenes are overwhelming. That is a dynamic range problem, and turning the volume up makes both ends worse. Compression is the actual fix.
Why film mixes do this
Cinema mixes are made for a calibrated room with very low background noise and a wide dynamic range available. In that environment, a whispered line and an explosion can coexist comfortably.
A living room has traffic outside, a fridge humming and small speakers. The available range is a fraction of the cinema's, so the quiet end falls below the noise floor. The mix is not wrong; it is being reproduced in conditions it was not designed for.
What to do
- Choose a stereo audio track
- Where a film offers both, a native stereo track is mixed for two speakers. A 5.1 track downmixed on the fly often leaves dialogue too quiet.
- Use compression
- Windows Loudness Equalization, a TV night mode, or the compression control in the tool here.
- Lift presence
- A boost around 2–4 kHz makes consonants clearer without raising the explosions.
- Turn on subtitles
- Unglamorous, but for genuinely difficult mixes it works better than any processing.
Boost a video file
Drop an audio or video file here, or choose one. It is processed on your device and never uploaded.
Processed on your device — nothing is uploaded. Loud audio can damage hearing: lower your system volume before boosting, then raise it gradually.
Frequently asked questions
Why is Netflix dialogue so quiet?
Usually a surround track being downmixed to stereo, which reduces the centre channel where dialogue lives. Netflix audio is DRM-protected so browser tools cannot help — see the Netflix page for what does.
Does night mode reduce quality?
It reduces dynamic range deliberately. For late-night viewing on small speakers that is exactly what you want.
