Volume Booster for Podcasts
The usual podcast problem is not overall quietness but inconsistency: a host recorded on good equipment and a guest on a laptop microphone in a room with a fan. Compression closes that gap, and a presence lift makes both easier to follow.
Settings that work
Raise compression first
This is the setting that matters for podcasts. It brings the quiet guest up toward the loud host, which no amount of gain achieves on its own.
Add presence
A lift around 2–4 kHz sharpens consonants and improves intelligibility, particularly for a distant or muffled speaker.
Then set the gain
With the levels evened out, apply whatever gain you need for your environment.
Why podcast levels vary so much
- Remote recording
- Each participant is captured on their own equipment in their own room, and unless someone levels the tracks afterwards those differences survive into the published episode.
- Distance from the microphone
- Sound pressure falls off sharply with distance, so a guest sitting back from their microphone can be many decibels below a host who leans in.
- No mastering stage
- Music passes through an engineer who sets a final level against a reference. Most podcasts do not, so episodes vary between themselves as well as internally.
- Compression on the host only
- Some setups process the host chain and pass guest audio through untouched, which widens the gap rather than closing it.

Processed on your device — nothing is uploaded. Loud audio can damage hearing: lower your system volume before boosting, then raise it gradually.
Frequently asked questions
Why is one speaker so much quieter?
Different microphones, different distances, and often no post-production levelling. Remote recording makes this considerably more common.
Does speeding up playback affect volume?
Not the level, but faster speech is harder to follow when it is already unclear. Improve clarity before increasing speed.
