Mac Volume Too Low
macOS has fewer audio settings than Windows, which narrows the search. Four things account for nearly all quiet-Mac reports, and the first is a hearing-safety limiter that many people do not know exists.
Check these four
- Reduce loud sounds
- System Settings › Sound. Caps output at a decibel threshold regardless of the slider position.
- Output routing
- Audio may be going to a display over HDMI, an AirPlay target or a Bluetooth device. Option-click the volume icon in the menu bar to see and switch outputs quickly.
- Balance drift
- System Settings › Sound › Output. A balance slider off centre halves what you hear.
- Audio MIDI Setup channel levels
- Applications › Utilities › Audio MIDI Setup shows per-channel output levels. A reduced channel here is invisible from the main settings.
Working with a smaller set of options
macOS gives you far fewer audio controls than Windows, which sounds like a disadvantage and is useful when something is wrong: there are only a handful of places a problem can hide, so a systematic check takes a couple of minutes rather than an evening.
The corollary is that when none of those places is at fault, macOS itself has nothing left to offer. There is no equivalent of Loudness Equalization to fall back on, so the remaining options are processing the audio before it reaches the system, or changing what you are listening through.
Frequently asked questions
Can I boost Mac volume past 100%?
Not with macOS itself. Boosting individual files in a browser works, because amplification is applied before the system output stage.
Why is my Mac quieter after an update?
Check Reduce loud sounds and the selected output device — updates sometimes reset both. Balance is worth confirming too.
