iPad Volume Booster
iPads share most of iOS's audio settings with the iPhone, but the physical situation is different enough to matter: speakers sit at the edges, orientation changes which ones carry which channel, and cases and stands frequently cover them. On an iPad, physical obstruction is a more common cause of quiet audio than any setting.
Physical causes first
- Your hand over a speaker
- Held in landscape, it is easy to cover one of the two speaker sets entirely. Models with four speakers lose half their output this way.
- A folio case
- Folded-back covers commonly sit over the speaker grilles. Try the same audio with the case removed before changing any settings.
- Orientation and channel mapping
- iPadOS reassigns left and right when you rotate. If audio seems to come from one side, rotate 180 degrees and see whether it follows.
- Grille debris
- Less prone to pocket lint than an iPhone but still worth checking, particularly on an iPad used around children or in a bag.
Settings worth checking
Headphone Safety
Settings › Sounds › Headphone Safety. As on iPhone, Reduce Loud Sounds caps headphone output at a set decibel level.
Late Night EQ
Settings › Music › EQ › Late Night. A compressor in disguise; it makes quiet content in the Music app significantly more audible.
Balance
Settings › Accessibility › Audio & Visual. Confirm the balance slider is centred.
Bluetooth output
If a nearby AirPods case or a HomePod has claimed the audio, the iPad speakers stay silent. Check Control Centre for the current output device.

Frequently asked questions
Why is my iPad quieter than my iPhone?
Usually placement rather than capability. iPad speakers fire from the edges and are easily covered by hands, cases and stands, and a tablet is typically further from you than a phone.
Can I boost iPad volume above maximum?
Not through iPadOS. Boosting a specific file in a browser works because the amplification is applied to the audio before it reaches the system output.
